Claude Sonnet 5.5: when Free Claude’s everyday upgrade is worth trying

What’s new, when to use or skip, Free gets Sonnet (Free ≠ Opus), usage in plain language, and one complete free exercise. Pro compare toolkit draft (CSV, checklist, templates) available as a companion preview.

The short version

Anthropic announced Claude Sonnet 5.5 on Sep 28, 2026. This Free guide keeps the main read problem-first for Free and paid Claude users deciding when an everyday Sonnet upgrade is worth trying, states Free gets Sonnet and Free ≠ Opus, attributes Anthropic claims, notes Free UI exact label UNKNOWN, and includes a complete one-page outline exercise with three full fictional sources. ElevateU did not run Sonnet 5.5 for the sample.

What this changes in practice

Beginners need a decision aid—not benchmark cheerleading. The useful path is: know what Anthropic claims is new, try Sonnet 5.5 for well-scoped everyday work (Free Yes), know when Opus is still the better paid pick, and practice one checkable outline from messy notes.

What’s new

On 2026-09-28, Anthropic introduced Claude Sonnet 5.5 (launch post (https://www.anthropic.com/claude-sonnet-5-5)).

In everyday terms, Anthropic says you can expect:

- A clear upgrade over Sonnet 5 for well-scoped everyday tasks — writing, docs/slides/spreadsheets polish, and bugs Anthropic frames as Sonnet’s lane (provider claim; ElevateU did not retest). - Faster and cheaper per typical task — Anthropic claims runs 30%+ faster and costs up to 30% less for most work, at the same list price as Sonnet 5 ($2 input / $10 output per 1M tokens)—savings from fewer tokens, not a lower sticker price. - Complement to Opus 5.5 — Anthropic positions Sonnet 5.5 for well-scoped everyday work; Opus 5.5 for complex open-ended judgment. - API / platform id — claude-sonnet-5-5 on the Claude Platform; Anthropic also states availability on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. - Free plan access — Pricing Models table: Sonnet = Yes on Free, Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise. Opus = No on Free. Exact Free UI picker string for “Sonnet 5.5” = UNKNOWN without hands-on—use whatever label your Claude menu shows after you re-check.

Attribution rule: All performance numbers, Terminal-Bench / GDPval-style tables, design-polish stories, and “clear upgrade” language on the launch page are Anthropic or partner claims. ElevateU did not run independent benchmarks or a live Sonnet 5.5 session for this guide.

Still coming later: Anthropic says Claude Haiku 5.5 will follow in the coming weeks. Pricing still lists Haiku 4.5. Do not treat Haiku 5.5 as released today.

Provider limits to know (Anthropic; not ElevateU tests): higher-risk cyber tasks may fall back to Sonnet 5; biology safeguards like Sonnet 5; distillation / preserved-thinking constraints; API between_tools migration if thinking was off.

Where this could help

Try Sonnet 5.5 when the job is well-scoped everyday work you will still check yourself—and Sonnet appears (or you already use Sonnet-tier Claude).

Three concrete situations:

Situation — Why Sonnet 5.5 might help (Anthropic’s framing) Polish a draft doc, slide outline, or spreadsheet narrative — Design polish / clearer everyday writing (provider) Fix a well-scoped bug or small coding change you can verify — Everyday coding / bugs as Sonnet complement to Opus (provider) Turn messy notes or a short brief into a structured draft — Everyday knowledge-work drafts without needing Opus-level open-ended judgment

You still own the check. A cleaner outline is only useful if the facts match your sources.

What it does not replace

Stay on your current model (or pick a different Claude tier) when:

- The work needs complex open-ended judgment Anthropic still points to Opus 5.5 (and you are on a paid plan that actually shows Opus—Free ≠ Opus). - Your current model already finishes the task well enough—switching for novelty alone wastes time. - You are switching only because a provider benchmark table looks better (e.g. Terminal-Bench or GDPval figures on the launch page)—that is not ElevateU proof. - The task is tiny (one-line rewrite, simple extraction)—current Haiku (still listed as Haiku 4.5 on pricing while Haiku 5.5 is “coming weeks”) may be enough. - Stakes are high (legal, medical, financial, customer commitments)—you still review the result, whichever model you use.

This is beginner editorial guidance, not a lab ranking of model quality.

Access and cost

- About 10–15 minutes - Claude Free (or another chat assistant you are allowed to use at work) - The three sample sources below (or three real messy notes of your own)

Remember: Claude Free includes Sonnet (per pricing). Free still does not include Opus. A paid plan also does not mean unlimited Sonnet or Opus.

Understand usage and cost before you start

Remember: Claude Free includes Sonnet (per pricing). Free still does not include Opus. A paid plan also does not mean unlimited Sonnet or Opus.

- Chat plans — Per claude.com/pricing (https://claude.com/pricing) (spot-checked 2026-09-29): Sonnet = Yes on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise; Opus = No on Free; Opus = Yes on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Exact Free UI label for Sonnet 5.5 = UNKNOWN—confirm in your menu. - API tokens ≠ chat plan — If you build with the API, Sonnet 5.5 list prices match Sonnet 5 at $2 / $10 per 1M in/out; Anthropic claims up to 30% less cost per typical task and 30%+ faster output (fewer tokens / speed—provider claims). That meter is separate from Claude Free/Pro chat usage. - Plan prices (only if you are comparing Pro) — Pricing page lists Pro around ~$17/mo annual or $20 monthly (re-check live; attribute to Claude pricing). Paying for Pro still does not unlock unlimited use. - No invented burn rates — ElevateU does not invent “one outline = X messages” or “one bug fix = $Y.” Re-check live pricing and Usage before you budget.

For plan tables and API id, see the optional sections at the end.

Optional: try a related example

Start with the fictional example. No ElevateU membership is required.

You will turn three short, messy sources into a 1-page outline with four headings: Problem / Done / Next / Open questions. You can try this on Free Claude if Sonnet 5.5 (or another Sonnet label) appears in your menu. If it does not, run the same prompt on whatever model you can see—the skill is the check, not the badge.

Discipline to practice: do not invent decisions, owners, dates, or budget numbers. If something is not in the sources, put it under Open questions or write Not stated.

What you need

- About 10–15 minutes
- Claude Free (or another chat assistant you are allowed to use at work)
- The three sample sources below (or three real messy notes of your own)

Step A — Read the three complete sample sources

Source 1 — Voice-memo dump from Sam Ortiz (project lead), 28 Sep 2026

Okay quick dump before I forget — Northline Community Hub website refresh.

Client contact is Lila Park at Northline. They want the public site to stop looking like 2019. Kickoff call was Friday 25 Sep. I said we'd send a one-page outline this week: problem, what's already done, what we do next, and open questions. I did NOT promise a launch date.

What I remember from the call:
• Their biggest pain is the Events page — dates are wrong half the time because volunteers edit a shared Doc and nobody updates the site.
• Donate button on mobile is below the fold; Lila said two donors emailed that they couldn't find it on their phones.
• Brand colors: they want to keep the green; no full rebrand.

I have not assigned who owns the Events workflow fix. Do not invent an owner.

Sam — I pulled the current site map into a checklist.

Done already:
• Inventory of 18 public pages (list in Drive: Northline-pages-2026-09-26).
• Mobile screenshots of Home + Donate on iPhone SE (in the same folder).
• Confirmed green hex on their letterhead matches the current CSS variable --nl-green.

Not done:
• Events page CMS training for volunteers.
• New Donate placement mock.

Please don't tell Lila we have a ship date for the Events fix. We don't. Also nobody owns volunteer training yet.

To: Sam Ortiz <[email protected]>
Subject: Re: Friday kickoff — what we need in writing

Sam,

Thanks for the call. For our board packet I only need a short outline:
1) the problem in plain language
2) what you've already finished
3) what you'll do next
4) open questions for us

Please do not invent a budget or a go-live week. Our board has not approved either.

— Lila

Step B — Copy this full prompt

You are helping me write a one-page project outline for a client board packet.

Use ONLY the three sources I paste below. Do not invent owners, ship dates, budgets, go-live weeks, or decisions that are not stated.

If something is missing, put it under Open questions or write: Not stated.

Output exactly these four sections, in this order, with short bullets:
1) Problem — what hurts, for whom, in plain language
2) Done — what is already finished (artifacts/files only if stated)
3) Next — concrete next work; owners only if named; otherwise Not stated
4) Open questions — anything the board/client still must answer

Rules:
- Keep the whole answer under 220 words.
- Calm, factual, no sales fluff.
- Audience: client board packet via Lila — no fake promises.
- End with a one-line Sources used list.

SOURCES:
[paste Source 1]
[paste Source 2]
[paste Source 3]

Step C — Illustrative full response

The block below is an example of a good answer shape. ElevateU did not generate this from a live Sonnet 5.5 session; it is written to match the instructions above so you can see what “done” looks like.

1) Problem
• Northline Community Hub’s public site feels dated; Events page dates are often wrong because volunteers edit a shared Doc and the site is not updated (Sam voice memo).
• Donate button sits below the fold on mobile; two donors emailed that they could not find it on phones (Sam voice memo).
• Goal of this outline: problem / done / next / open questions for Lila’s board packet — no launch date promised (Sam; Lila email).

2) Done
• Inventory of 18 public pages (Drive: Northline-pages-2026-09-26) (Riley Slack).
• Mobile screenshots of Home + Donate on iPhone SE (same folder) (Riley Slack).
• Confirmed letterhead green matches CSS variable --nl-green (Riley Slack).
• Kickoff call held Friday 25 Sep; green brand kept; no full rebrand (Sam voice memo).

3) Next
• Send this one-page outline to Lila this week (Sam voice memo).
• Events page CMS training for volunteers — owner Not stated (Riley Slack).
• New Donate placement mock — owner Not stated (Riley Slack).

4) Open questions
• Who owns the Events workflow / volunteer CMS training? (not assigned — Sam; Riley)
• Board-approved budget? Not stated — Lila asked us not to invent one.
• Board-approved go-live week? Not stated — Lila asked us not to invent one.

Sources used: Sam Ortiz voice memo 28 Sep 2026; Riley Cho Slack 29 Sep 2026; Lila Park email 26 Sep 2026.

Step D — How to check your own result

Use this checklist on your model output (everyday model and Sonnet 5.5, if visible):

1. Source lock — Every fact appears in at least one pasted source. If you cannot point to the line, delete it or mark Not stated / Open questions.
2. No invented owners — Events CMS training and Donate mock must stay Not stated (or open questions)—do not assign Sam, Riley, or Lila as owner of unfinished work unless a source names them.
3. No invented budget or go-live — Lila explicitly forbade inventing budget or go-live week.
4. Four headings present — Problem / Done / Next / Open questions in that order.
5. Done vs next — Page inventory, screenshots, and green hex belong in Done; training and Donate mock belong in Next.
6. Audience — Board-packet outline for Lila—not a sales pitch or a fake timeline email.
7. Compare A vs B (optional) — If you run the same prompt on two models (e.g. prior Sonnet vs Sonnet 5.5), prefer fewer invented claims and less cleanup—not the longer answer.

If Sonnet 5.5 never appears in your Free menu, you still completed the skill: a strict, checkable one-page outline from messy sources. Re-check your Claude model picker; ElevateU cannot name the exact Free UI string without hands-on.

Illustrative teaching example; not a recorded model response. Review the result before using real information.
